Skyride Construction Soars at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden

For Immediate Release: February 26, 2025

COLUMBIA, S.C., February 27, 2025 — Riverbanks Zoo and Garden's "Bridge to the Wild" vision for the future continues to take shape as construction of the Saluda Skyride reaches new heights, promising an exhilarating experience for visitors.

Set to open later this year, towers for the aerial gondola now stand on both sides of the Saluda River, which marks significant progress in the Zoo's development. "The Saluda Skyride is a symbol of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden's commitment to innovation, conservation, community, and economic growth," says Tommy Stringfellow, president and CEO of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. "We're excited to offer this experience to our visitors while advancing our mission of environmental stewardship.”

The Saluda Skyride will feature 19 cabins, each accommodating up to eight passengers, offering a thrilling bird's-eye view of the Saluda River and surrounding landscape. Designed with accessibility in mind, the cabins can easily accommodate wheelchairs and strollers, ensuring a comfortable 2 ½-minute ride for all guests. The system can transport 1,600 guests per hour, connecting the Zoo and Botanical Garden campuses while providing unparalleled panoramic views.

Economic Impact and Community Enrichment

The "Bridge to the Wild" initiative is projected to boost Riverbanks' economic impact in the Midlands to over $175 million annually, creating 500 additional jobs. By expanding attractions and continuously improving the park, Riverbanks strengthens Columbia's position as a premier destination.

Environmental Stewardship

The Saluda Skyride project has been carefully planned to minimize land disturbance, protect wildlife habitats, and even create new opportunities for native species. The Zoo worked closely with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and the Department of Environmental Services (DES) to implement strategies that ensure the well-being of sensitive wetland ecosystems and local wildlife.

Safety and Sustainability

Safety is Riverbanks' top priority. The Saluda Skyride will have a dedicated team that conducts thorough daily safety checks on all important features. By using an electric aerial transportation system, Riverbanks is significantly reducing fossil fuel usage on campus, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and responsible environmental practices.

The Saluda Skyride will be a pay once, ride all day experience with tiered pricing options and special discounts for Riverbanks members.

"We're not just building an attraction; we're creating a new way for our community to connect with nature and each other," adds Lochlan Wooten, Chief Operations Officer at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. "The Saluda Skyride is just the beginning of our vision for the future of Riverbanks."

Stay tuned for more updates on this project and future phases of our "Bridge to the Wild" initiative.
