Giraffes are sometimes called “watchtowers of the savanna”. Because they’re so tall, they can see danger coming before any other species around. When they move, other prey species do too.
- Diet:
- Giraffes eat leaves and the tender tips of branches, most notably from the thorny acacia trees. Giraffe are ruminants, like a cow, and can be seen chewing their cud as they rest throughout the day.

- The savannas and grasslands of Africa.

Giraffe populations have declined by nearly 40% in the last 30 years due to habitat loss, civil unrest, and poaching. Riverbanks supports giraffe conservation by making an annual donation to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation in partnership with Dominion Energy.
Bruce is our tallest giraffe and joined the herd at Riverbanks in 2014. He can be picked out of the crowd with his darker color and large number of bony bumps on his face and head.
